Students interested in becoming an IST Diplomat can apply or be nominated each semester. Through this process, the organization seeks a diverse pool of candidates to represent the college’s many majors and student identity groups.
Applications and nominations can be submitted at any time, and new members are considered for the next training cohort approximately eight weeks into each fall and spring semester. Nominated students will be contacted by program advisers to request they accept their nomination by completing the application form.
If you have questions, please email ISTengage@psu.edu.
Eligibility
Students applying to become a Diplomat must:
- demonstrate the values of Penn State and the College of IST through their commitment to academics, research, mentorship, and leadership
- must be admitted as an INFST pre-major or declared a major in the College of IST at University Park
- Students from Commonwealth Campuses who will be enrolling to University Park in the fall of their junior year are encouraged to apply in the spring prior to their change of campus. Virtual interviews will be accommodated.
- participate in the program for at least one year
Search Process
IST Diplomats are selected during both the fall and spring semesters. The process includes the following steps:
- Nomination: Self-nominations and nominations from students, staff, and faculty are accepted.
- Application: Share your prior experience and future goals in a resume and application form.
- Group Interview: Share the story of your Penn State journey with your peers and the IST Diplomat selection committee.
- Selection: Selected candidates join during the upcoming semester. All other candidates are offered a feedback session.
Training
Newly selected students participate in a multi-week training series that covers topics on leadership theory, communication strategy, implicit bias, college operations, and more. Diplomats meet with a wide variety of individuals from prospective students and donors to current students and college staff members.
The cohort model of joining the IST Diplomats creates a small community within the larger student group. Veteran Diplomats provide support and guidance to newer members as they move through the program. Returning Diplomats may serve in coordinator and director positions to lead their peers and meet with IST staff, faculty, and administration.
